Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery hosted the official opening for the Nimbin Diversity exhibition recently.

Among the 21 artists exhibiting work was Northern Rivers’ resident Donna Sharam who is also part of the volunteer-run gallery at Nimbin.

She described the Gunnedah exhibition as “eclectic art” created using a different and wide range of materials including acrylics, oils, timber, Japanese wood blocks, felt – even rust art impressions lounge cushions.

“Nimbin has an alternative lifestyle, a very colourful vibe and it’s projected in the way people do their art practice,” Ms Sharam said.

“It comes from their culture in music and art, sometimes traditional but also innovative and alternative.

“To be able to share that to other communities is fantastic.”

Ms Sharam also hosted a free artist’s talk at the Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery on Sunday, followed by an art workshop titled ‘Picasso My Face’ described as a journey of self-expression through art.

About 21 attendees participated in the Sunday events which included a pop-up shop and art design created in part, with the artists eyes closed.

Gunnedah’s Jade Punch helped bring the visiting art to town after being inspired by Nimbin’s annual art exhibition.

“Everything is so different – each artist has their own style,” she said.

“I think it’s important we encourage diversity in our art forms and encourage new artists to branch out.”

The exhibition continues in Gunnedah until November 22.
