UPDATE FRIDAY, via Gunnedah Show Society:

“Great news Gunnedah. We are so happy to confirm, there will be a rodeo at the 2024 Gunnedah Show. The rodeo will be run under ABCRA Est 1946 rules.
“We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from the Gunnedah community over the last few days. The rodeo continues to be a very important event for Gunnedah Show and we are pleased it is continuing this year.
“Our small but hard-working committee have been amazing, working around the clock to make this happen.
“Thank you again to our sponsors for making this possible.
“We look forward to seeing you at the 2024 Gunnedah Show April12-14 .”

EARLIER: Gunnedah Show Society has announced its rodeo will not proceed this year due to financial constraints.

“We completely understand everyone’s disappointment,” a show spokesperson said on Wednesday.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for the committee to make and it wasn’t something we took lightly as we know how much people enjoy competing and attending. It has always been a much-loved event at our annual show.

“We tried everything we could right up until the last possible moment to raise funds but were unable to match the high costs involved. Unfortunately, the costs of running a professional rodeo became too high for us to maintain.

“We are extremely grateful to the sponsorship and support we have received from the community. We will be contacting sponsors of this section to provide more detail and discuss a way forward.

“Our committee is made up entirely of volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the annual show going. Our priority as a committee is to keep the society financially viable. Our annual show has been an important part of the Gunnedah community for 136 years and our aim is to make sure that we keep this tradition going into the future, keeping the spirit of the show alive for future generations to enjoy.”
