The impressive Gunnedah Court House was built in 1879 to service the needs of the growing community, with tenders called on November 23, 1877 – just two decades after Gunnedah had been officially declared a township. Christine Foletti is the newest to have work exhibited at the Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery and while she calls herself a nurse and midwife before an artist, she believes everyone has the capability to unlock their creative side. Her work is notable by the bright colours of her flora and fauna subjects but made more intriguing by a closer look. Christine’s interest in using waste as an art medium came from working in remote areas, particularly on Christmas Island. “I started beach cleaning and finding random objects, picking them up and thinking how I could repurpose them,” she said. Talented young advocates took part in The Land Sydney Royal AgShows NSW Young Woman Competition. Representing their communities across the North West region, the young women were standouts for their local towns, including Gunnedah’s Elly Byriell. The zone winners of the Zone 4 Young Woman final were Emily Barton (Walgett Show Society) and Katie Williams (Armidale and New England Show Society). The Zone 4 winners will now compete at the Sydney Royal Easter show. Towns represented at the zone final included Armidale, Barraba, Dorrigo, Glen Innes, Gunnedah, Guyra, Inverell, Moree, Narrabri, Quirindi, Tamworth, Walcha, Walgett, Warialda and Wee Waa.
An emotional farewell was held in St Joseph’s Parish recently, when Sr Christine Belling and Sr Gabrielle Foley were honoured with a special blessing at Mass and morning tea in the parish hall. Sr Christine will be moving to Casino to be closer to her family and Sr Gabrielle to New Lambton in Newcastle where several other Sisters live. The Sunday morning Mass was concelebrated by parish priest Fr Abmar Dumayag and former PP Fr John McHugh, with the church filled to overflowing as parishioners gathered with family and friends and former students connected to the Sisters over the generations.
