By Dylan Smith:

The festivities of the 2024 Gunnedah Show kicked off in style on Friday evening, with a packed pavilion celebrating success in the art and photography sections.

CHRIS BURGESS MEMORIAL TROPHY: The Chris Burgess Memorial Trophy, for the grand champion of the photography section, was presented by Chris Mammen to Ellen Sturgess.

Both sections were again well-supported in both entries and sponsorship.

Keli McDonald officiated as master-of-ceremonies at the celebration and acknowledged Geoff Dawson’s previous work at presiding over the night’s formalities.

Guest-of-honour, state Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson officially opened the evening and praised show volunteers on their extraordinary efforts.

“It is a feature of the Gunnedah Show,” Mr Anderson said of the art and photography displays.

Mr Anderson acknowledged the continued work of art convenor Maree Kelly and photography convenor Paul Mathews.

“It’s always a pleasure to come here tonight.

“When you paint, or when put something up on display, it’s a little piece of yourself that goes up.

“This would be the biggest photo exhibition in the North West.”

Michelle Rapley, of Binnaway, claimed top honours in the art section for her drawing titled ‘Moving Forward’.

The Chris Burgess Memorial Trophy, for the grand champion photography entry, was awarded to Ellen Sturgess, of Gunnedah, for her entry in the portrait and people section.
