Gunnedah is leading the way in pest control management with nationally-accredited training programs set to be delivered within the region.

The training programs are a joint initiative of Gunnedah-based, Crack Thump Australia, and PVO Training in Inglewood, Qld.

One of the first programs to be rolled out will be ‘use firearms to humanely destroy animals’.

Crack Thump Australia CEO, Greg Sams, said the training will be unique in its delivery and instruction.

The conventional qualification has been adapted and extended into a two-day course at Gunnedah that will test participants in real life scenarios across the local area.

It will also feature course requisites such as confirmation of animals to be shot; preparation and handling ammunition and weapons safety; ensuring the shooting area is clear and notifications have been made where necessary; shooting the animal in a body site that causes instant death and handle or dispose of dead animals as required.

The first course will be held in Gunnedah this weekend.

Some participants are travelling from interstate for the first of multiple pest management training modules that Crack Thump Australia and PVO Training plan to implement.

Long-term they hope to host courses in Gunnedah every 6-8 weeks.

PVO Training CEO Darren North has run similar courses throughout Australia for several years.

He highlighted how firearms form just part of the training involved.

“The shooting is just one component – it’s also about analysis of the risks and hazards,” Mr North said.

Sams and North collaborated on this training program after working together on previous pest management projects.

The pair aim not to be the biggest training provider but quietly the best.

They offer small course numbers – no more than eight students – and “job-ready” skills that ensure participants are one step ahead on the training continuum.
