A wet and woolly winter weekend swept through the Gunnedah region – pushing up rivers, flooding low lying areas and washing out local sport fixtures.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Gunnedah Airport recorded 8.8mm of rain in 24 hours to 9am Sunday.

Across town at Gunnedah Resource Centre 11.4mm fell during the same period, including 6mm in just one hour about 3.30pm on Saturday.

Rainfall totals were inconsistent further north, with just 3mm falling at Narrabri but 12.8mm at Moree, meanwhile Tamworth recorded 17.6mm.

Steady rain throughout the region caused river levels to rise including the Namoi at Gunnedah.

The Gunnedah river height peaked at 3.96 metres by 12.45pm on Monday – well below any flood markers. The river height must exceed 7.3m to reach the lowest flood warning – minor level.

As at Tuesday, the river height was 3m and steady.

Some road closures were enforced in the Gunnedah shire including Bulunbulun Road and Maitland Street at Breeza as well as Long Point and Clifton roads.

Gap Road in the Liverpool Plains shire was also closed.

Junior sport across Gunnedah was a washout with soccer and rugby league forced to cancel weekend games.

Ladies’ Day at Gunnedah and District Australian Football Club was also cancelled due to the wet weather.

Despite the deluge, it was a quiet weekend for Gunnedah SES members with no call-outs in the community. But people are urged to maintain vigilance heading to the spring and summer months, particularly with already saturated ground.

Heavy frost followed the rain earlier this week as cooler temperatures returned to the region – Gunnedah falling to near freezing or below on Monday and Tuesday.

The remainder of the week is expected to be mostly sunny in Gunnedah as a strong high pressure ridge that entered the west becomes the dominant feature across the inland.

This will bring stable weather patterns with cold and frosty mornings.
