Gunnedah’s Leo Mortimer delivered an outstanding performance in last Saturday’s rugby union match against Inverell, contributing 16 points to the team’s total. Mortimer scored one try and as usual was impressive with the boot, adding five conversions, including one penalty conversion.
Despite Mortimer’s efforts, the Red Devils were unable to secure a victory, falling to the Highlanders in a high-scoring encounter, 54-31.
The Red Devils began strongly with a penalty goal from Mortimer followed by strength in structured play within the forward pack, however they struggled to maintain their lead as the Highlanders surged ahead.
Gunnedah’s other tries were scored by Patrick Grant, Nick Lyons and Tom McGowan.
In reserve grade, with no substitute players available, the Red Devils showed true grit and impressive resilience despite losing 41 to 21 in the hard-fought game. Lincoln Stewart scored three sensational tries with Sam Osborne converting twice and Josh Leys contributed the final points with another conversion.
Gunnedah Rugby Club will host its annual sponsors’ day this Saturday.
The day will feature the final games of the regular season against Quirindi,
including first grade, reserve grade, and the always-entertaining third grade. Play starts at 12:30pm for the final home game of the year.
