Saturday marked the final home game of the season for the Red Devils. With perfect weather, an enthusiastic crowd, sponsors tents, jersey auctions, community presentations and a heartfelt tribute, the Gunnedah Rugby Club hosted a fantastic final home game.

The First Grade men’s team delivered a nail-biting conclusion to the home season, battling into overtime. The match against the Quirindi Lions was a thrilling affair that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. Despite a hard-fought effort, the Red Devils fell short, losing 15-19.

The first points of the game were awarded after Leo Mortimer converted a penalty goal, putting the Red Devils in the lead.

Fullback, John McKay was the first try scorer for the Red Devils. The second try was scored when second rower, Tim McDermott made a break from a mid-field scrum.

Captain, Will Burke, followed McDermott who spectacularly offloaded the ball for Burke to charge and dive at the line to score in front of the roaring crowd. Leo Mortimer added to the total with a conversion. The victory was not to be, but the Red Devils were cheered as they completed their walk past the grandstands to thank the home crowd for their ongoing support.

In Reserve Grade, the Red Devils faced a tough match, ultimately losing 14-36. Despite the defeat, there were notable performances, including a try from Bill Whitney and a standout effort by Sam Osborne, who not only scored a try but also converted both tries of the game.

The day was also a poignant tribute to Gai Smallwood, a beloved life member of the club who passed away earlier this year. Gai, a dedicated club secretary and volunteer, had been a pillar of support for the Red Devils. Her memory was honoured as her son, Geoff Smallwood, kicked off the Old Boys and Third Grade match with a memorable dash down the wing to score one of many tries.

The Old Boys match was a highlight of the day, capturing the hearts of the crowd with enthusiastic cheers and playful heckles. The event served as a fitting end to the season, blending competitive spirit with heartfelt remembrance, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
