With the Paris Olympic Games providing inspiration for young athletes across Australia, the opportunity for young runners in Gunnedah to test their capabilities comes with the staging of the 48th Gunnedah Gallop community fitness run on September 8.

The popular community fun run will be staged by the Rotary Club of Gunnedah on Sunday, September 8 starting at 9am at the Gunnedah Showground.

Registrations will be taken on the day from 8am.

“The event is designed to promote community health and well-being and active involvement in sport,” Gunnedah Rotary Club president Peter McArthur said this week.

“With the Paris Olympics fresh in our minds and the Paralympics coming up at the end of the month we hope that people will be inspired to participate in the Gunnedah Gallop and improve their fitness and health.

“The success of Olympic 1500 metres silver medallist Jess Hull should also see an increase in aspiring female athletes being part of this year’s Gallop – what a great way to start an Olympic dream,” Mr McArthur said.

“But it is also about participation, so we are encouraging families to join together, enjoy some exercise at your pace, and heighten awareness of the important benefits of sport and exercise on the overall health and well-being in our community.”

The format will be similar to previous years, with 8km run through the residential areas of Gunnedah and 2km family walk or jog around the showground and education precinct.

The 2024 Gunnedah Gallop is supported by the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.

“The Gallop is an important health and well-being event on Gunnedah’s community calendar. Rotary has a major focus on personal wellbeing and mental health support in our community and with the backing of the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal, the Gallop as an event can assist rural communities in addressing health issues and support personal well-being,” Mr McArthur added.

“We are delighted to again be promoting the Gunnedah Gallop, with proceeds from the event supporting Australian Rotary Health programs.”
