Gunnedah town centre is bustling, motels are full, pubs and restaurants are packed, while cars and caravans line streets across the region – it must be AgQuip week.

Quintessentially Gunnedah, it is hard to see AgQuip anyway else.

The world has come a long way since the event’s inception more than 50 years ago. Online sales dominate market and bricks and mortar shopfronts are not the foundations of businesses like they once were.

Other major events like music festivals virtually died out years ago but AgQuip remains almost as popular as ever.

People still love to browse the AgQuip aisles, kick the tyres on a new header and check out the latest developments in their chosen field.

It’s great to see to people returning year after year to this major event in Gunnedah, investing money in our little community and returning to their home towns with stories to share about our region.

It pins Gunnedah on the map and burns like beacon to all that the ‘real Australia’ exists outside Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Sure, locals are inconvenienced by road closures, longer wait times for their take away pizza and occasionally higher than average prices for some general goods and services but it’s a small price to pay for the greater benefit this event brings to our town.

If nothing else, it is all worth it when you see the smile and hear screams of joy from the three-year-old, first-time AgQuip visitor who has found his holy grail – the heavy machinery display.

Here’s to Gunnedah punching above its weight and here’s to more major events for our community and region in years to come.
