Gunnedah Shire Council has moved to “formalise” a long-standing financial contribution towards the delivery of the NAIDOC Community Fun Day for the next three years.

Councillors heard how council has “supported the Community Fun Day at Wolseley Park for over 12 years with an allocation of $2250 in its Operational Plan”.

Council’s Director Planning and Environmental Services Andrew Johns recommended the financial contribution continue with a formalised arrangement from council.

“Council has supported this for a number of years but as with Anazc Day and other events, we wanted to get a formal resolution,” Mr Johns said.

“I wasn’t here 12 years ago so I’m not sure how that decision was made but to be clear to the community about where the money is being spent, this will formalise the arrangement.”

Council endorsed an allocation of $2250 for the 2024-25, 2025-26 and 2026-27 financial years.

The NAIDOC Community Fun Day, organised by the Gunnedah NAIDOC Week Committee, has been postponed from NAIDOC Week in July to Sunday, September 29.

Council’s August business paper said the four-hour event attracts a crowd of more than 150 and provides the community with access to a free barbecue, cultural dance, live music, community stalls, jumping castles, guessing competitions, and activities for young people and adults.

The council resolution to continue support for the event will be placed on public exhibition for 28 days.
