Gunnedah High School’s Liam Reid and Azaria Murray are two of the newest recipients of the prestigious Victor Chang School Science Award.

The awards recognise gifted students to help foster their growth in science, technology, engineering and mathematics with the aim to encourage a STEM career path.

The Year 11 students received the awards at a school assembly last month in front of peers and family.

The students were nominated by teacher Rob Mason and was the first time in GHS’ history to house two recipients.

Both have a passion for science and their units are heavily composed of STEM subjects that reflect that.

Both students said they are fascinated by science because it explains how the world works, however, their interest in career paths take different directions.

With a mind for helping people, it is no surprise Liam is considering studying biomedical science, which primarily researches human biology, health and diseases.

“Everything revolves around science.” Liam said. “It explains everything and you can help people by using it.

“This award is going to be great for my future.

“It will help me get to even further places and maybe help more people.”

Azaria Murray and Liam Reid was presented the Victor Chang Award by teacher Rob Mason and Cr Rob Hoddle.

Similarly, Azaria recognises science as key to understanding more about the world, having a dream since Year six to become an astrophysicist.

The science is a branch of astronomy, looking at properties and structure of cosmic objects.

“I like knowing what it could be and what it is and extending what we know,” she said.

Azaria also has packed in the sciences for her senior years.

Working hard at her chemistry, biology, physics and maths is all the beginning steps on her academic path.

She will have to complete an undergraduate degree before securing her honours and a PHD.

“I have always been straight forward with my academics because I have been achieving high for my future,” she said.

Both students thanked their science teacher Rob Mason for nominating them for the awards and being dedicated to their learning.

“Honestly, [I thank] all the teachers that have taught me, especially Mr Mason who has upped my education by a level,” Azaria said
