A morning tea was held to acknowledge and celebrate June and Rodger Lucas’ 20 years of volunteering and support to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
The couple has participated in multiple charity golf days, clearing sales, raffles, the Gunnedah Show, poultry shows and other catering events cooking hundreds of steaks, sausages and slices to help raise money to keep the helicopter flying.
This vital service provides free medical assistance and transport for locals and visitors to Gunnedah and the New England region.
Together, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Gunnedah Volunteer Support Group has this year been able to send $25,000 to the helicopter’s Tamworth base. The funds raised have helped ensure no-one ever pays for transport on the rescue helicopter.
June and Rodger are stepping back from the volunteer support group and while they will be very much missed, group members wished them all the best.
June said with strong support now behind the Gunnedah group membership, the time was right to take a step back with their involvement.
“It is a great group of ladies and men,” June said.
“It doesn’t matter what we do, someone is always willing to help.”
The long-time supporter said the invaluable fundraising efforts of volunteers could not be underestimated.
“[The helicopter] is only available because of groups like ours,” June said.
