Gunnedah paused to remember and honour servicemen and women during Monday’s Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph.
Hosted by the Gunnedah RSL sub-Branch each year on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, the service marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I.
Today, it also commemorates those who have given their lives in all conflicts since.
This year’s Remembrance Day service at the Gunnedah Cenotaph featured an address by mayor Colleen Fuller.
Sub-Branch secretary Jan Commins, who also delivered the opening address, said it was one of the first official duties undertaken by the new Gunnedah shire mayor on behalf of the RSL.
In her speech, mayor Fuller called on the community to be grateful for the sacrifices of those who have gone before us.
“At this time, on this single minute, our RSL asks us one thing – to remember to remember,” she said.
“We have so much to be thankful for as we stand here in 2024. We are thankful for those who have lost so much in so many conflicts, and who have made it possible for us to build the Australia we have today.
“We will always remember. We will always remember the names, the people and the sacrifices of those who have served. Lest we forget.”
Prayers and the Benediction were also read by Peter Hall from the Salvation Army Gunnedah.
Wreaths were laid on behalf of service organisations, Gunnedah Shire Council and Gunnedah Public School, among others.
Sub-Branch president John Commins delivered the Ode For the Fallen before the Last Post and Reveille was played by bugler, Maja Heath.
Members and guests later gathered at Club Gunnedah for lunch and light refreshments.
The Gunnedah sub-Branch will host its monthly meeting on Sunday.
