An undefeated half-century from Gunnedah’s Lachlan Straney was not enough to prevent City United recording an innings victory in the second grade cricket clash at Kitchener Park.
Gunnedah was on the back foot on the first Saturday before play resumed last Saturday, with the visiting team at 6-219 in reply to the home team’s first innings of 135.
City United reached 283 for the loss of eight wickets before declaring, and then dismissed Gunnedah for 103.
Despite some resistance from Josh Langdon and Will Hicks, Gunnedah flopped to 7-14 in the 18th over and was in danger of being dismissed for 25 or less.
Andrew Kelly made 16 before departing with the total on 32, and then Straney dominated a ninth wicket stand of 71.
Straney clouted five fours and four sixes in his 52 not out from 46 balls, while Josh Steel hit a four and a six in his 17 from 37.
Straney smashed the first two balls of the 30th over for six, before whacking two fours and a six in the subsequent over.
Straney reached his 50 with his final boundary, and then he faced a maiden over before the match ended as the final two wickets fell from the final two balls of the 35th over.
Henry O’Hehir had a tremendous game for the victors as he scored 93 and had match figures of 5-32.
City United 8-283 (Henry O’Hehir 93, Lachlan Mason 45; Josh Langdon 2-33) defeated Gunnedah 135 (Will Hicks 33 not out, Zafar Mukhtar 33; William Davis 3-17) and 103 (Lachlan Straney 52 not out; Charles Hill 3-8, Henry O’Hehir 3-10) by an innings and 45 runs.
