The NSW government has confirmed Cohens Bridge will not be widened as part of current works.
Gunnedah Shire Council general manager Eric Groth had written to Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson seeking his representation to the state government to include widening of the bridge’s deck and carriageways as part of the work. Mr Groth wrote on behalf of residents who had raised concerns about the narrow width of the bridge.
“Residents have observed the current deck is very narrow with vehicles having to pull over or at times reverse to enable passing traffic to get across before they can proceed,” Mr Groth wrote.
“Many have also raised that given the length of time the bridge is expected to be closed for the planned works and reported estimated expenditure, that it may be prudent to leverage this to get something better than what currently exists.”
In reply, NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said due to the bridge’s heritage significance on Transport for NSW’s Heritage and conservation register together with the design, type and structural nature of the bridge, widening will not be considered.
“The current project scope is to maintain and strengthen the existing structure to ensure its lifespan well into the future,” Ms Aitchison said.
“It includes a replacement of the concrete deck as well as painting. Due to the narrow bridge width, Transport for NSW will also review signage on approach to the bridge.
“It is estimated that the project will take around two years to complete.
“Transport for NSW advises there is an alternative route in close proximity to the bridge via O’Keefe Avenue, Old Blue Vale Road, Blue Vale Road, Kamilaroi Highway and Chandos Street and adds around 14 minutes to journeys.”
Transport for NSW advised in August about the ongoing maintenance to Cohens Bridge which includes a 14-week closure to all traffic in “early 2025” at a date to be confirmed.
When the minister’s response was presented to councillors, Ann Luke suggested “walking access” for pedestrians across the Namoi River would also be desirable in future plans. But the councillor conceded realistically such plans would be challenging given current financial constraints.
