UPDATE 2PM:
Speaking outside Gunnedah Police Station today, Oxley Police District, Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Tom Aylett, said investigations are ongoing into the child’s death, including the exact nature of the fatal injuries.
“At the moment the nature of the injuries is being ascertained in fullness but it’s fair to say they were serious injuries that led to the child’s death,” he said.
“We’re speaking with all family members at the moment and we’re being given enough assistance from those family members but certainly we encourage the community to come forward with information as well.
“Sometimes information can be fact, sometimes it’s rumour but if anyone has information, they should come forward to investigators and allow us to decipher that.
“The ultimate job for my investigators is come to enough information we can put forward to the coroner in terms of this child’s tragic death.”
