Spotlight: Junior Brain Games and Bookends Literacy Assist

Starting back up again on Wednesday, March 5 at 3.30pm is Junior Brain Games! This a fun programme for children aged 7-12 that boosts literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills, meanwhile encouraging imagination and creativity with craft.

Bookends Literacy Assist will also be recommencing soon. After selecting some books from the shelves, participants join adults for one-on-one reading sessions in 20-minute blocks. As part of the programme, children are also automatically joined to the 1000 Books After School Challenge.

If you’re interested in either of these programmes (either as a participant or volunteer), contact us!

Spotlight: New books

Fresh to our shelves is Blood Ties (AFT NES) by Jo Nesbo.

Brothers Carl and Roy Opgard have succeeded in life. Or at least they’ve had as much success as is possible in a small town like Os, where they’ve killed their way to the top. But Sheriff Kurt Olsen believes he has new evidence that will prove the brothers’ involvement in several past murders – but Carl and Roy are used to covering their tracks, and they’re not afraid to get their hands dirty.

From author Olivie Blake comes Januaries (FSF BLA).

With iconic fan-favourite stories and entirely original pieces, Januaries contains modified fairy tales, contemporary heists, absurdist poetry and at least one set of actual wedding vows. This stunning collection of short fiction features 14 magical ruminations on life, death and the love- or desire for revenge- that outlasts both.

My mate Mark is a Hammerhead Shark (EASY W) is new to our picture book section.

Mark the hammerhead shark doesn’t have it easy – unless he wears a disguise, waiters won’t serve him, and he can’t go anywhere without people screaming and running away or teasing him. But when a little boy befriends him on a cruise ship holiday, he can see something in Mark that everyone else can’t… could Mark be a harmless hero?

Explore the wilds of our local library – adventure awaits!

New books at Gunnedah library include Januaries by author Olivie Blake.
