Gunnedah RSL Sub-Branch has welcomed its new committee for 2025 and beyond.

The Gunnedah committee will be led by incoming president Anthony Adams.

The Australian Army veteran takes on the role from outgoing president John Commins who was thanked for his contributions in recent years.

“A special thank you to our outgoing president, John Commins, for his leadership and commitment to our veterans and the wider community. His efforts have left a lasting impact, and we appreciate everything he has done to support and strengthen our sub-branch,” Mr Adams said.

“No doubt I’ll be leaning into John’s knowledge and expertise to learn more about this role and the extended executive.”

Having served in Afghanistan in 2010 during Operation Slipper, the former infantry soldier brings a unique appreciation of the needs of the modern-day veteran community.

Mr Adams hoped to use this experience to drive new perspectives and fresh ideas at the sub-branch and the wider RSL membership.

“Be the change you want to see in your community,” he urged.

This included a big focus on advocating for more services for the veteran community – from health care to housing, employment opportunities and general wellbeing support.

“Often there are not a lot of these services in regional areas,” he said.

Mr Adams is also eager to “change the stigma” around the RSL and create more awareness about the invaluable role of the organisation in country communities like Gunnedah.

“It is about trying to change that mindset,” he said.

“I think it’s achievable … and it starts with our younger veterans and their families.”

The new president is looking forward to bringing the Gunnedah community along for the journey with the sub-branch.

He encouraged groups or individuals looking to get involved in sub-branch services, activities or events, to reach out to the committee and to look out on their social media platforms.

“We want to have meaningful conversations with our community,” Mr Adams said.
