About $11,500 was raised for Yallambee Gunnedah on Sunday March 16, as the accommodation facility for people with a minimum age of 55 had a charity golf day at the Gunnedah course.

It was the second time this event took place, with more than 50 golfers involved in the 4-person Ambrose.

The money raised came from a combination of sponsorship, auction items, 100 Club, meat raffles, and a donation from the Gunnedah Golf Club.

Auction items included platinum tickets for a Waratahs versus Chiefs Super 15 Rugby match, a truck and dog road base, air fryer, voucher for Country Mile Signs, and a load of wood.

Yallambee Gunnedah board secretary Owen Hasler said events such as this one were important for two reasons.

“Firstly, financial support is integral for maintenance and upkeep,” he said.

“Secondly, events like this make people aware of Yallambee and what we’re doing, and what we’ve done for Gunnedah people aged 55 and over.

“There is a shortage of accommodation, and finding accommodation in a safe environment is important.

“We thank the Gunnedah Golf Club for offering us the opportunity to conduct our second charity golf day together with John Harford who did a great job in conducting the auction, and Ian Jordan who assisted board member Amanda Cooper with the presentation of award – a great team effort.”

Although golfing numbers were somewhat lower than at last year’s inaugural event, organisers noted that this year’s event coincided with Weeks of Speed events and was also on the same weekend as touch football grand finals.

“We are very grateful to the Gunnedah community members who supported us whether as sponsors, donors, golf players, Rotary Club of Gunnedah West members who cooked the BBQ, 100 Club ticket buyers and auction participants,” Owen said.

“It was a great outcome and a good day and will allow us to undertake further maintenance and updates at Yallambee including replacement of windows and installation of ventilators in the unit bathrooms, and installation of batteries to save on power bills utilising recently installed solar panels.”

The winning team comprising Zak Kelly, Teagan and Patty Cain and Dale Moore had a score of 53.25 points while runners-up Craig Donaldson, Mick Smyth, Richard Turner and Warren Ferguson had 55. Ian Jordan won the prize for men’s straight drive, while Mary-Anne Grosser won the prize for women’s straight drive.
