The animal nursery returns to the Gunnedah Show this weekend.

From poddy calves to baby goats, the cute and cuddly animal nursery is a regular drawcard for show-going families.

The exhibit is hosted each year by Gunnedah Poultry Club which accepts gold coin donations on entry.

For the last 10 years, the annual donation has benefited Riding for the Disabled Gunnedah.

Nursery convenor and poultry club secretary Janice Mammen said the donation is the club’s way of giving back.

“It’s something we like to do (for RDA),” she said.

Poultry entries were standing at about 200 birds early this week which is slightly down on previous years. This was due to the high-degree of caution held by exhibitors on biosecurity.

Although entries have not reached the peaks of previous shows in Gunnedah, organisers are still expecting a high standard of poultry on show.

Giving particular encouragement this year was the nomination of about 40 junior poultry exhibitors in the under 16 years’ division.

Ms Mammen has been assisting with club’s poultry show since she was young.

She said the club’s presence at the show helps bridge the divide between the farm gate and the wider community.

The animal nursery and poultry exhibit is supported each year by the club’s loyal volunteers.

“We have great members and receive great support,” she said.

Still on the cute and cuddly, the pet show will return to the Gunnedah Show this year.

Entry categories include Best Dressed, Best Smile and Best Trick. Winning honours are also up for grabs in the dog high jump, children and pet obstacle course (3-15 years) and other pet category. Pet show convenors encourage people to “be creative” with their pet nominations which are not limited to dog and cats.
