Gunnedah’s third grade soccer team will begin its premiership defence on Friday next week while the club’s fourth grade team also starts its 2025 season in the Tamworth competition.
Fixtures will take place at the Tamworth-based Gipps Street fields, although Gunnedah will occasionally have a home game.
While the season draw is yet to be finalised, the third graders are set to be in a 12-team competition while the fourths are in a six-team competition.
Most of Gunnedah’s premiership-winning third graders from last year are expected to play on, with a formidable defence line led by Josh West, Lachy Gourley, James Roberts and Matt Davis.
Star midfielder and top goal scorer Reuben Bekker will also return after he recovers from a pre-season collarbone injury. He will be supported by Jesse Swain, while goalkeeper Richard Grant also returns for another season.
Grant may not hold pace with the youngsters, but he makes up for it with gusto while also serving as an on-field coach.
Centre midfielder and captain Lachy May, who divides his time as club president and football enthusiast, is looking forward to the season after being overwhelmed with the community support last season.
Gunnedah’s squads have a diverse but dynamic skill set as there is a mix of pace, strength and accuracy as well as a level-headed approach.
May said the values the club embedded last year will be set again for this year to ensure everyone feels comfortable and ready to play their best game.
