The Gunnedah Poochettes AFL team is set to have its first hit-outs of the season this Saturday as a series of pre-season fixtures take place in Dubbo.
The Poochettes are likely to oppose Dubbo and Parkes in games of 20-minute halves.
At least a couple of Tamworth Kangaroos players are poised to line up for the Poochettes as the Gunnedah team has about eight players absent due to other commitments.
Poochettes coach John Woolaston said some of the squad began training back in mid-January, focusing firstly on fitness aspects before a contingent of players took part in the local 9s summer competition.
Woolaston said things had not been too highly pressurised while the intensity hadn’t been too high at training lately, as it was about “getting the hands on the footy”.
Gunnedah’s coach said the skills had been good while he was “impressed with the marking ability so far”.
Woolaston said he was not too worried about the results this Saturday as he was keen for the players to gain some match practice.
While several players have moved on after lining up for the Poochettes in recent years, this Saturday’s squad is likely to have some familiar names including Laura Ewington, Zoe Law, Beccy Wilson, Braie Devine, Abbey Ruttley, Macey Carlyon, Amelia Woolaston and Jayla Woolaston.
