Numbers were down for the poultry entries in the Gunnedah Show this year but Gunnedah Poultry Club’s Chris Mammen said there was still good competition.

“The show is before [The Sydney Royal Easter Show] this year which makes exhibiting difficult for some people,” Chris said.

Despite this, Chris still thought there was a great turnout of junior entries.

The junior section boasted about 50 entries and while the total exhibition was at about 200.

Most of the competitors were Gunnedah locals but others also came from Coolah, Quirindi, Boggabri and Tamworth, with some being repeat entrants.

“They come every year so it’s good that they can support us,” he said.

Chris’ family is well involved in the show and has been for a long time, with wife Janice Mammen also being the nursery convenor and poultry club secretary.

Club members brought in the variety of animals for the nursery which proved to be a crowd pleaser, especially among families. Pigs, donkeys, pigeons, chickens, turkeys and geese were among the inhabitants.

Gunnedah Riding for the Disabled (RDA) was grateful as always to receive donations from the public at the door. Chris said it was a way to give back as the RDA helps the club.

“They help us here because we don’t have enough volunteers in the club to man the door ourselves,” he said.
