The article about the old Wirrabelah Public School has raised a great deal of interest and information about its whereabouts has since also come to light.

When the school closed in December 1968, the land was handed over to the Department of Lands in 1969. By the time Gunnedah Girl Guides took over the land in 1973, the building had been moved to Copeton Dam.

Now it appears that the school house has found new life at the Inverell Pioneer Village where it is now known as the ‘Times’ Office.

The school building was sold by the Public Works Department to a Bingara contractor, RJ Kirk, and was later purchased (minus the roof) by the Inverell Pioneer Village trust on June 27, 1977, for the sum of $250.

Inverell Contractor BJ Chisholm moved the building which has been altered to resemble the original office of the Inverell Times – so now anyone connected with the school can see the sturdy old classroom, where they received their early education, and be grateful once again to the pioneers of Wirrabelah.
