Fine and sunny conditions greeted 55 golfers for the annual Meals on Wheels (MOW) charity golf day at the Gunnedah course, on Sunday April 13.

More than $8,000 was raised for Gunnedah MOW even though numbers were somewhat lower than previous occasions, as this year’s event coincided with the start of school holidays and the lead-up to Easter.

Some of the golfers knew someone who utilised Gunnedah MOW, while there was strong support from the Gunnedah Golf Club as well as sponsors.

There was also support from the Rotary Club of Gunnedah West, which ran a barbecue.

With Mother’s Day approaching, many of the auction prizes had a Mother’s Day theme as there were hampers, gift packs, vouchers, telephones, pickles, jams, blankets, drink bottles, caps and umbrellas.

Gunnedah MOW spokesperson Colleen Fuller said events like this one enabled people to see that MOW “is here and is run by volunteers”.

Colleen said some people who used MOW were unable to pay or found it hard to pay on time, largely due to cost-of-living pressures.

With debts accumulating due to these payment issues, Colleen said the charity golf day helped deal with MOW’s financial matters.

On the course, there were some very close results as the winning team in the 4-person Ambrose had 52 ¼ points while the runners-up had 52 ½.

The first placegetters were Matt Giles, Sam O’Gorman, Mick Flannery and Mick Dubber while the second placegetters were Cameron Ellbourn, Megan Ellbourn, Pat Mortimer and Zoe Connolly.

Less than a point separated second from third, third from fourth, fourth from fifth, and fifth from sixth.
