Lucas Grosser secured a place on the hole-in-one honour board at the Gunnedah Golf Club as he achieved one of the sport’s most illustrious feats last Saturday.

The 15-year-old Gunnedah-based golfer became one of the youngest to land a hole-in-one at Gunnedah, as his moment of glory came on the seventh hole in the Greg Anderson Memorial Stableford event.

Lucas finished with his best scratch score so far, 71, while he had a handicap of seven.

Lucas said a hole-in-one “was definitely a dream”, although “it’s never in your head that it’s actually going to happen”.

Having played the back nine holes first, Lucas was on the third-last hole of the day when he picked up his six-iron on the seventh hole which was a par three while the distance from the tee was 155 metres.

Lucas later said he “needed to hit straight” due to trees on the left- and right-hand sides.

“When I hit it, I thought ‘that’s pretty good’,” he said afterwards.

“Then the wind grabbed it, with the wind going from right to left, and helped it towards the hole.

“It hit the green, took one bounce and hopped into the hole.

“It was a bit of a shock, then it set in what happened.

“I went to the hole and it was sitting in there.”

For good measure, Lucas saw the ball go into the hole while his brother Ben and parents Dave and Maryanne were looking on from behind him. Four other members also saw it, as they were on the tee box on the nearest hole.

“You’re second guessing yourself and wondering if it really happened,” Lucas said.

“It really is tricky for a minute until you see it, basically.”

Lucas said there was “a lot of adrenaline” and that this may have affected his concentration on the next hole, without affecting his scores on the final two holes.

As per custom for a hole-in-one, Lucas said he would have the ball mounted on a trophy.

Having taken up golf between two-and-a-half and three years ago, Lucas practices every day and usually plays two or three times each week.
