A group of nurses gathered at the Gunnedah Hospital on Monday to commemorate International Nurses Day.

Community health, emergency department, theatre and general ward nurses enjoyed morning tea and a cup of coffee for the worldwide event which takes place on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

Gunnedah Hospital acting health service manager Jodie Martin said it was “a day of remembering and appreciating what extraordinary work nurses do”.

“We want to make sure our local nurses are appreciated and honoured on this special day,” she said.

“Everyone is heartened by a nurse in some way, whether they know a nurse, or have met one, been treated by one, or are one.

“It’s not easy, especially in rural areas where some nurses have to travel far to get to work and face daily challenges, but they show up and are the heart and soul of caring.

“They pass through your life for a minute and impact it for an

eternity.”
