The Gunnedah Bulldogs are looking forward to their first home match of the North West men’s AFL season this Saturday, after starting the season with two heavy losses away from home.
Following a 124-point defeat at Inverell in round one on May 3, the Bulldogs went down 17.12.114 to 5.6.36 against the Tamworth Kangaroos on Tamworth soil last Saturday.
While the Kangaroos recorded a three-goal victory in round one which was the club’s first triumph in 627 days, the Tamworth team showed it was no fluke after setting up back-to-back wins with a dominant first quarter.
The Kangaroos kicked eight majors in the first term to establish a 50-point lead, while Gunnedah’s sole score in this period was one behind.
The second quarter was evenly balanced as Gunnedah kicked 2.2.14 to 2.1.13, before the Kangaroos landed 4.4.28 to 1.1.7 in the third term to set up a 70-point advantage.
The home side increased its tally by 3.4.22 to 2.2.14 in the final term.
The victors had eight different goal-kickers, with Matthew Hall the most prolific with four majors.
Gunnedah player-coach Jakob Vearing booted three of his team’s goals, while Mark Ewington kicked the other two.
The Bulldogs and New England Nomads will be desperate for victory this Saturday after the Nomads also recorded back-to-back defeats.
New England’s three-goal loss to the Kangaroos in round one was followed by a seven-goal loss to the Tamworth Swans.
