A team of Year 11 and 12 Primary Industries students from Gunnedah High School achieved outstanding success at Wingham Beef Week, one of the region’s largest and most competitive agricultural events.
The students’ efforts in livestock management were rewarded with excellent results:
· Third place in the Led Steer/Heifer Hook Class – Heavy Middleweight.
· Fifth place in the Heavy Middleweight Steer/Heifer Class.
This year’s event broke records, with more than 480 students and 180 steers in attendance.
Throughout the week, students participated in a range of educational sessions, including beef enterprise management, use of virtual reality for learning, university sessions on careers in agriculture, and judging of retail cuts and carcasses.
On the final day, they also attended Wingham Beef Exports, viewing the carcasses of the steers they showed, which students described as a bittersweet moment.
The experience was invaluable for students to expand and develop their cattle showing skills. Teaching staff commended the students’ resilience, perseverance, patience and teamwork during an extremely wet, muddy and busy week.
Gunnedah High School extended its thanks to farm manager Phil Tydd for his dedication in preparing the steers and supporting students, and to Lauren Sanderson for her assistance throughout the excursion.
