Gunnedah’s contingent achieved some impressive results while representing North West in round one of the regional state league tennis at Sawtell on May 10 and 11.

Harry Tudgey and Lachlan Finnerty were in the U11 boys division, and Sophie Neilsen was in the U15 girls division while North West managers Dale Martin and Gabby O’Gorman also came from Gunnedah.

Teams from Northumberland and North East also competed as they were part of the northern conference, with the top two boys and girls from each age group representing their region in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

North West opposed North East Sky Blue on the first morning, with North West winning the tie 19-5.

Harry won 6-0 while Lachlan prevailed 6-1 in the singles, and Sophie was made to work hard before winning her singles 7-6.

Harry and Lachlan teamed up in the boys doubles and enjoyed a 6-3 win, while Sophie had a 7-6 defeat in the girls doubles.

Harry and Lachlan recorded 6-2 wins in the mixed doubles, while Sophie was part of a 7-5 win.

Gunnedah’s afternoon fixtures against Northumberland were cut short due to wet weather, which also prevented Gunnedah’s scheduled contests with North East Royal Blue the following day.

Northumberland led North West 8-3 but no winner was announced in this tie due to the number of unfinished matches.

Harry (6-3) and Lachlan (7-6) had wins in the singles, while Sophie went down 6-2.

Sophie also played in the girls doubles, and was edged out 7-6.
