New and long-time locals of the Gunnedah shire spent the day at Wolseley Park on Saturday for a market day with a twist.
The Gunnedah Shire Council and Two Rivers Art Council partnered up to create the ‘Welcome Markets’.
As the name may suggest, the aim was to encourage new people in the area to join in with the community spirt. It also served as a convenient source for information regarding what the shire can offer.
Despite the event’s aim to bring in new and prospective residents, people of all backgrounds and time spent in Gunnedah were encouraged to stop by.
The myriad of stallholders braved the rain-soaked morning but were soon rewarded with clear skies and plenty on offer for visitors.
A variety of stallholders were represented including service providers, local clubs and organisations seeking members, and small businesses.
Live music was provided by the Gunnedah Conservatorium through Meg Clowes and Dominic Goodwin-Hauck.
Further encouragement to explore the area was provided with two bus tours of the Gunnedah area.
People on board discovered local landmarks while also connecting with other new residents.
Among those visiting the markets was the Soloman family.
Vince and Leema moved from Qatar last year with their children so Vince could pursue an occupational therapist role at Gunnedah Hospital.
Leema said the family is settling well into its new town and rural lifestyle.
“Gunnedah is such a good calm town with plenty of things to do,” she said.
“Except we are still getting used to everything closing early at night.”
Their children are enrolled at Carinya Christian School and enjoy the wide variety of sports available to the town – especially cricket and swimming.
