New committee membership is being sought to inform discussions about the operation of Maules Creek coal mine.

The Maules Creek’s Community Consultative Committee (CCC) helps communicate information about the mine’s social and environmental operations between the committee and the broader community.

The committee is looking for a mix of people who live locally or are members of a local community or stakeholder group – such as not-for-profit, environment, Aboriginal or industry organisations – to attend about four meetings a year.

Committee membership is voluntary but those already participating say the real value is in giving back to the local community.

Community representative Robyn Grover has been part of the committee since its inception when membership numbered more two dozen.

She said meetings sometimes involve presentations and site tours, depending on the circumstances.

Participation has fluctuated over the years but Robyn said the dialogue about all aspects of the Maules Creek mining operations is still important to people in the area.

“It is good to be part of the discussion,” Robyn said.

Whitehaven Coal general manager community engagement, Darren Swain, said the committee’s role ensures all perspectives are heard.

“The Maules Creek CCC is a valuable forum for open dialogue, and we value the insights and feedback community members bring to the table,” Mr Swain said.

“This is a chance to have your voice heard and play a meaningful role in shaping how the mine supports the region and interacts with the local community and businesses. Committee members help to make sure local perspectives are understood and considered as part of our broader operations, while also playing an important role in sharing information with the community.”

Whitehaven employees and contractors are not eligible for appointment to the committee as community representatives.
