Attending the NSW Parliament’s Secondary Schools Student Leadership Program was a truly eye-opening experience. As Year 12 students and school leaders, we were honoured to gain firsthand insight into how our parliamentary system works, from observing Question Time in the Legislative Assembly to engaging in discussions with members of parliament. The opportunity to visit the historic chambers and then tour Government House, where we met Her Excellency, the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC, was unforgettable. This excursion deepened our appreciation for civic leadership and the democratic values that shape our state, and it inspired us to stay actively involved in leadership processes beyond school gates.
One of the (many) highlights of the day was hearing directly from the MPs, including Tamworth’s Kevin Anderson and learning about their responsibilities in maintaining order and fairness in parliament and beyond. We also ran into former Gunnedah High Captain, Sarah Mitchell MLC, and it was inspiring to see how much thought and care go into every aspect of government decision-making. Walking through the halls of parliament and the rooms of Government House gave us a sense of the tradition and responsibility that come with leadership. This experience broadened our knowledge and strengthened our confidence to lead with integrity in our school and community. Gunnedah High for me (us)!

Clontarf State of Origin selection for Keaton
Gunnedah High School was proud to announce that Year 11 student Keaton Walters has been selected to play in the Clontarf State of Origin NSW Rugby League team. About 45 Clontarf senior students from both Queensland and New South Wales will be chosen for this honour, recognising their engagement in education, leadership potential, and football talent.
Keaton will travel from Tamworth to Sydney on June 11, before flying with his teammates to the Gold Coast. While there, the group will tour the Gold Coast Titans High Performance Centre and attend the Titans-Manly NRL match following their own game on Friday, June 13.
The school commended this remarkable achievement – a testament to Keaton’s hard work, dedication, and commitment, both on and off the field.
His efforts have truly paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder, a school spokesperson said.
