Gunnedah’s Mikayla Ferguson had a win in one apparatus last weekend as she competed against nearly 100 other gymnasts in a trial to select teams for next month’s Border Challenge competition.

A national Level 7 gymnast, Mikayla claimed overall seventh place in the trial which qualified her in the second of the two NSW teams.

Mikayla won outright honours in the Vault apparatus with a score of 12.1 out of a possible 12.50. This followed her gold medal-winning performance at the recent Country Capital Cup where she scored 12.35 on this apparatus.

This year’s Border Challenge will be staged at the Gold Coast after the event previously took place at the Sunshine Coast.

The Border Challenge began as a competition between Queensland and New South Wales teams but, as it gained popularity, it expanded after other states requested they be allowed to attend.

Teams from across Australia now converge to present their routines in the nation-wide competition.

Following the Border Challenge, Mikayla will join some of her L5-7 teammates at another qualification competition in Sydney, where successful gymnasts will be chosen for the State Championships.
