Fall under the spell of the Swinging Sixties – with Nicki Parrott live in Gunnedah this Friday!
Join international jazz star Nicki Parrott and her Northern Rivers Band for Feelin’ Groovy – a toe-tapping, heartwarming musical celebration of the unforgettable songs that defined a generation.
Presented cabaret-style at the Gunnedah Town Hall, get a group together and pack your “indoor picnic basket” with drinks and nibbles and then sit back and relax to a program of music you probably know and love.
“You can expect a dazzling journey through the golden era of song, brought to life by a world-class ensemble,” said Gunnedah Conservatorium director Rebecca Ryan.
“With the setlist chosen on the night, no two performances are the same — but you can expect timeless favourites from icons like Paul Simon, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and many more.”
Born in Newcastle, Australia, Nicki started her musical training at age four with the piano and flute. Nicki switched to double bass at the age of 15. After graduating high school she moved to Sydney to study jazz at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music where she was granted funds by the Arts Council to study in New York with Rufus Reid.
Nicki was bassist and vocalist for the legendary Les Paul for over 10 years. As part of the Les Paul Trio, Nicki worked side-by-side with guitar greats from Paul McCartney, Steve Miller to fellow Aussie, Tommy Emmanuel.
In addition, she performed in several Broadway shows and at most of the world’s top jazz venues and festivals including The Jazz Cruise and sold-out performances at Birdland and Dizzy’s in NYC. Nicki has performed with such jazz greats as Clark Terry, Joe Wilder, Scott Hamilton, Bucky Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Michel Legrand, Houston Person and Arif Mardin, to name just a few.
Nicki recently returned home to Australia where she still tours the globe and records. The show, Feelin’ Groovy, is a retrospective and reimagining of songs from the 60s with her Northern Rivers Band.
Some of the songs you might hear include: Feelin’ Groovy – Paul Simon, These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ – Lee Hazlewood, Up on the Roof – Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Both Sides Now – Joni Mitchell, What the World Needs Now Is Love – Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
