Perusing a weekend newspaper recently (lap of luxury, I know!), this Topical columnist was reading a feature story about leaders in the Australian agricultural sector.
Within the story, a bonafide banana farmer on the NSW north coast had some pertinent commentary about the state of agricultural affairs in this country.
This Aussie farmer with immigrant family heritage succinctly described how agriculture had become the victim of its own evolution.
He said the advancements of technology and equipment, means there’s now less people growing food.
Problem is that means less votes too.
“Governments take the agricultural sector for granted. When you need policy changes or assistance, it’s just not their priority,” the farmer said.
We couldn’t agree more mate.
I’ll leave the last words to author Bill Bryson whose book ‘Down Under’ described the incongruous contrast of this country we call Australia.
“It is the driest, flattest, hottest, most desiccated, infertile and climatically aggressive of all the inhabited continents and still Australia teems with life.”
