Thousands of racegoers were trackside for the 2025 Wean Picnic Race Day last weekend.

Race club patron and life member, Gunnedah’s John Perkins estimated more than 2000 people turned out for this year’s event on Saturday.

“It’s great to see,” Mr Perkins said.

“People are still talking about it.”

Punters arrived via the car load and bus load – all 12 buses in fact, with the coaches ferrying racegoers from towns near and far including Gunnedah, Boggabri, Narrabri – even as far as Forster.

Six marquee venues – each catering for about a dozen people – also proved popular for race patrons at Wean this year.

The premium offering was complemented with its own bar.

Aside from the superb six-race card and

always-popular trackside events such as fashions in the field, one of the day’s biggest highlights was the ‘chicken race’.

Once the equine starters had finished, the club recruited chicken ‘jockeys’ – complete with costume-themed chicken suits – to run a race of a different kind.

Mr Perkins said the novelty event even featured its own Calcutta – with each chook auctioned off pre-race.

The Wean grounds were looking their best again this year – due largely to the long hours and hard-working efforts of the race club committee and volunteers.

Mr Perkins said volunteers started preparing at least six months out from this year’s event at Wean.

“That’s why it was so well organised,” he said.
