There was no rest for flood victims in Gunnedah as the water went away, the shovels and brooms came out.
For CMCA RV Park custodians Sherril Leach and Lyn Portelli that required cleaning up mud and debris at the end of last week.
They have been with the RV park since June and staying until September.
Sherril said they were displaced as the waters rose, thankfully given evacuation instructions to the Gunnedah Showgrounds by the SES.
“We just closed and locked the gate – there were no other campers there,” she said.
“The SES have been excellent to us.
“They were very good at responding on the Saturday, can’t complain at all.”
Sherril was grateful the damage wasn’t as bad as she had anticipated, especially compared to the 2021-2022 flooding.
“It will be a long time before we mow,” she joked.
“There was more damage last time because it went out possibly six times in three months.
“A lot of the plants and trees that were planted [beforehand] were destroyed. So we had to replace those.”
Sherril said the water had previously come from a different direction and made more of an impact on the custodian’s shed.
The equipment was thankfully taken to higher grounds before the flooding.
She would like to see in the future more skip bins being provided near Maitland Street due to the number of greatly impacted homes.
“Should have at least a couple because there’s a lot of houses that have been severely damaged,” she said.
“Yes, there was more flood last time and it was consistent, this one came in severe, it got to about 8.6 metres, I believe last [time] it was 7.6 metres.
“I feel sorry for the people around here that have been absolutely trashed.”
