The Handball Kings and Queens are ready to go head-to-head in Gunnedah’s inaugural Ripple Effect Community Handball Competition.
Sunday, September 14, is the date of Gunnedah’s first Community Handball Competition and the Ripple Effect North West committee are looking for those who might be handy with the rubber ball to play for not just trophies and prizes but the ultimate bragging rights.
Ripple Effect North West Inc are a committee of local community members who came together to raise funds and provide access to mental health programs and education in our community for our community after seeing a gap in early intervention services.
President Jacinta Mannion said it is a fun way for the wider community to get together and raise money for those much needed programs and education.
“We are wanting to hold a fun and competitive day that pits businesses and organisations against each other to find the King or Queen of handball in Gunnedah,” she said.
“Raising funds and connecting people will be a great day all round.”
When the committee began organising the event, it had to navigate the very complex world of handball rules but have been able to finally settle on a set of rules for Gunnedah’s competition.
Committee member Kate Pinn explained what rules would apply on the day.
“We could have gone on and on with the volume of rules out there but decided to keep it simple,” she said.
“We ended up with rules people might be familiar with like no double bounce, no nutties and the no cherry rule.
“When you register for the competition you get a great little box that includes your access to the championship, a handball and those rules explained.”
The committee are hoping to get more businesses, schools and organisations involved and from the response so far, it looks like it will be a winner.
“When we talk to people about it, it seems to bring up some very core memories about playing handball at school. There are a lot of fond memories being unlocked in and it appears many people remember themselves as champions of their school handball courts. We are looking forward to a very competitive final,” Mrs Pinn said.
Businesses, schools and organisations are being invited to register and find their champion to compete on the Sunday, October 14. Whether that is through their own competition or nomination, their champion will play to win the ultimate crown of Handball King or Queen.
