Primary school students converged at the Wolseley Park tennis courts on Tuesday last week and this week, as Gunnedah was one of many locations across the country to stage the Todd Woodbridge Cup.

Eighty students from across grades 5 and 6 took part on day one (August 12), before 120 students from across grades 3 and 4 were involved on day two (August 19).

The event was largely about participation and giving the students the chance to represent their school in a team environment.

Modified equipment and numeric scoring were used, while there were mixed gendered teams.

The courts often had two doubles matches occurring at once, meaning there were four players on each side of the court.

Day one featured two teams from Carroll and Warialda public schools, and one team from each of Gunnedah Public School, Gunnedah South Public School, Mullaley Public School and Carinya Christian School.

In the battle for first place, Warialda 1 defeated Gunnedah South five sets to three after Warialda topped Pool A while Gunnedah South topped Pool B.

Carroll 1 defeated Carroll 2 six sets to two after those teams placed second in their respective pool.

The third-placed Carinya beat the fourth-placed Gunnedah Public six sets to two in Pool A, while the third-placed Mullaley defeated the fourth-placed Warialda 2 in Pool B after they tied at four sets all with Mullaley scoring 65 points to 55.

St Xavier’s Primary School had five teams while Gunnedah South had four on day two, with Gunnedah Public, Carroll and Carinya having one each.

St Xavier’s 1 placed first and was followed by St Xavier’s 2, Gunnedah South 4, Gunnedah South 3, Carinya, Gunnedah South 2, Carroll, St Xavier’s 3, St Xavier’s 4, St Xavier’s 5, Gunnedah South 1 and Gunnedah Public.
