Local football fans will be spoilt for choice this weekend, with three codes having home fixtures on Saturday before the other code has a gala day on Sunday.

Gunnedah has senior rugby union, rugby league and Aussie Rules contests at home on Saturday, before a junior girls soccer gala day takes place the following day.

If Gunnedah’s senior men’s rugby union and rugby league teams had won their respective matches last Saturday, Gunnedah would instead have secured hosting rights for the Central North Rugby Union (CNRU) and Group 4 rugby league grand final fixtures on September 6.

Instead, the CNRU and Group 4 grand finals will be at Moree, after the Moree men’s rugby union and rugby league teams defeated Gunnedah last Saturday.

The Moree Bulls first graders will chase their second CNRU premiership in three years – having won in 2023 and been runners-up in 2024 – while the Moree Boars first graders chase back-to-back Group 4 titles after winning last year’s decider at home against Boggabri.

In the CNRU, the Gunnedah Red Devils first grade men’s and women’s teams play at Gunnedah Rugby Park this Saturday with grand final spots on offer.

In Group 4, Gunnedah’s first grade men’s team will line up at Kitchener Park on Saturday with a grand final place also up for grabs.

In the AFL North West NSW competition, the Gunnedah Bulldogs and Poochettes have their last round-robin fixtures before the finals series starts.

With a finals berth out of reach, the Bulldogs men have their final outing of the year.

The Poochettes meanwhile are set to finish second in the women’s division, while their opponent this Saturday is fourth on the five-team ladder.
