About 30 children up to 12 years of age from the Gunnedah region converged at the Wolseley Park tennis courts last Sunday morning, as Gunnedah staged a ‘Coloured Ball’ event for the first time.

The occasion was part of the North West Region Coloured Ball League, designed to provide a fun and enjoyable introduction to tennis for juniors.

With participants grouped according to

their tennis ability and coach recommendation, the red colour catered for players up to eight years of age while the format was doubles fixtures.

The orange colour catered for nine years and under while the green colour was for

participants up to 12 years old, with these colours involving singles and doubles fixtures.

With red ball fixtures lasting five minutes while orange and green ball fixtures lasted seven minutes, participants rotated opponents and doubles partners for the sake of variety and inclusivity.

Background music was played, to add to the atmosphere.

Local tennis coach and Louis Academy owner Craig Louis said the event was about participation and fun, while participants received a taste of matchplay without pressure as there were no prizes on offer.
