What started as a simple mission by Jayde Bain and Brendan King to assist the organisation which helped their family during a time of need, has raised more than $6000 for cancer support in the Gunnedah region.

The family staged the ‘Brave the Shave’ Family Fun Day for the Gunnedah community on Sunday.

The fundraising event held at Club Gunnedah was in support of Can Assist Gunnedah which assists local people in the community affected by cancer.

The family braved the shave and had their hair (and Brendan’s beard!) cut as part of the fundraising effort.

Almost $4500 was raised of the $5000 fundraising target by lunch time Sunday, such was the generous support of the community.

Kate Knight and Linda Lee from Can Assist were “overwhelmed” by the family’s support for the organisation.

“Especially as they came to us (to stage the event),” Linda said.

“It’s wonderful to think people do want to give back,” Kate added.

Many family and friends also attended the community event which included raffles, face painting for the children and a barbecue lunch.

Can Assist volunteers, many who were in attendance, gave special thanks to Club Gunnedah for hosting the event and Gunnedah Fishing Club for its donation of $600 from the Sunday meat raffles.

According to Can Assist, rural cancer patients are diagnosed later, more likely to die and 17 times more likely to report geographical, financial barriers to care, compared to metro areas.
