Gunnedah-based tennis junior Lachlan Finnerty gained invaluable experience and had plenty of fun while representing NSW Country against NSW City in an event during the recent United Cup in Sydney.

While the United Cup featured 18 countries in a mixed team format at the Ken Rosewall Arena, the NSW Country versus NSW City event comprised two boys and two girls in each of the U10, U12 and U14 age groups.

As the number one seed for the Country U10s, Lachlan had the hard task of facing City’s top players in the boys singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Although Lachlan didn’t record a win, he was involved in very close and hard-fought tiebreaker matches while City proved too strong overall despite a gallant effort from the Country competitors.

After play on day one, the youngsters were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour at the United Cup where they were up close and personal with several players including Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The youngsters were also courtside when Casper Ruud had a training session, and they were lucky enough to watch the Australian team train for a little bit.

The youngsters also experienced the players’ hub, and witnessed a lot of behind-the-scenes action that the general public doesn’t have the chance to see.

After all play was completed on the second day, the youngsters were treated to free tickets to watch Australia contest Norway.
