Eight Gunnedah Goannas touch footballers are set to represent the Northern Eagles region at the junior regional championships in Tuggerah on April 18 and 19.

The selections were made after last weekend’s Northern Eagles selection trials in Coffs Harbour, where 10 Goannas took part.

Fourteen junior Goannas were invited to the trials at Coffs Harbour, having been identified as talented players at last month’s Northern Eagles junior championships.

Goannas committee member Will Dowe said, “We were so incredibly proud to see so many players from our small country affiliate train and play with other talented players from Ballina, Port Macquarie, Armidale, Glen Innes, Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga, Foster, Wauchope, Macksville, Grafton, Inverell, Taree and Tamworth.”

The upshot from last weekend’s trials was that Lexi Bullen made the U12 girls team, with Dan Rushbrook making the U18 boys team while Claire Dowe, Audrey Hannaford, Jazmin Hobden, Sarah McInerney, Imogen Torrens and Lara Torrens made the U18 girls team.

Last weekend was the first time Lexi, Sarah and Lara had trialled for the Northern Eagles.

The selected players will attend a couple of training sessions over the next six weeks in preparation for the Tuggerah-based carnival.

The Northern Eagles will encounter the best of the best from other NSW regions such as Sydney Mets, Sydney Scorpions, Southern Rebels, Hunter Western Hornets and the West South West Suns on April 18 and 19.
