St Mary’s College-based (Gunnedah) student Josh Spinks secured two gold medals and a silver medal while representing NSW at last week’s School Sport Australia Triathlon and Aquathlon Championships at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast.
Josh was crowned Junior Boys Australian All Schools Aquathlon Champion, and he came equal-first in the overall Junior Aquathlon pointscore title.
First up, Josh placed second in his category and second overall in round one of the junior aquathlon with a time of 5 minutes and 47 seconds (5:47).
In an aquathlon mixed team relay, the team of four featuring Josh placed second in its category and third overall with a time of 30:37.
In the next stage of the junior aquathlon, Josh placed first overall with a time of 4:20.
In the junior aquathlon A final, Josh took out top spot with a time of 8:47.
With the deciding race featuring a 600m run, 300m swim and another 600m run, Josh paced himself early before attacking in the swim to break the field, and then surging in the opening stages of the final run to make himself uncatchable.
Josh is showing no signs of slowing down as he has more school sport on the agenda, with Armidale Catholic Schools touch football at Inverell this Thursday followed by NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC) swimming in Sydney next Wednesday and Thursday.
St Mary’s College Gunnedah sport coordinator Tim Kennedy said, “St Mary’s College is extremely proud of Josh’s performance resulting from his dedication and commitment to training for his chosen sports.”
