Construction starts on replacement of Quirindi’s iconic Swinging Bridge

Construction has officially begun on the long-awaited replacement of Quirindi’s iconic Swinging Bridge, more than three years after it was destroyed in severe flooding in November 2022.

Liverpool Plains Shire Council confirmed work is now underway on the new structure, which will be a modern steel cable suspension bridge designed to improve safety, durability and community access.

As part of the redesign, the bridge deck will be raised by 600 millimetres to help reduce the risk of damage during future flood events.

Mayor Ken Cudmore said the project represents a significant step forward for the community, restoring both a practical pedestrian link and a well-known local landmark.

“The Swinging Bridge has been part of Quirindi’s character for generations. Raising the bridge to reduce future flood risk reflects our commitment to long term community infrastructure,” Cr Cudmore said.

“The new Swinging Bridge will reconnect pathways across the Quirindi Creek and will provide a safer, more robust crossing for residents and visitors for many years to come.”

Initial construction activities are already in progress, with preparatory works taking place on site. Council says it will continue to update the community about any temporary changes to access during the construction period.
