A big crowd rolled up to be part of Narrabri Touch’s Wee Waa gala night, with both junior and adult players taking to the field, as well as community members enjoying the action from the sidelines.
“We were very happy with the event, ecstatic with the amount of people who turned up – it was a really fun night,” said Narrabri Touch president Mereka Gleeson.

“It was the first time we’ve done the gala night, and with the positive turnout, we will definitely look to hold another one.”
Players from the Wee Waa district have starred in touch footy teams over the years – Cathy Conomos, to name just one outstanding athlete from the Cotton Capital – and the Narrabri Touch committee thought the event would be a good opportunity to drum up interest while supporting local communities.

“Realising there isn’t a lot of sport that gets played in Wee Waa, and we used to have heaps of Wee Waa players in the comps, so we wanted to give back and try to inspire people to play again,” said Gleeson.
“Yes, Cathy is definitely a legend of our sport; she’s represented NSW and is such a great player. After the gala night, Cathy has got together a new ladies’ team for the next competition, so that’s very exciting,” Gleeson said following the event held on 13 May.
Gleeson thanked attendees and said: “The support and enthusiasm were greatly appreciated.

Touch football players of all ages took part in Narrabri Touch’s gala night in Wee Waa.
“If anyone would like to become involved in touch footy, get in contact with our committee. If you don’t have a team, we can look to add you to another team.
“If anyone is interested in running a primary school-aged competition in term 1 of next year, we’d love to discuss further and support.”
