Gunnedah High School student Fayra Petriaton is helping shape conversations about inclusion and belonging after being selected to speak on a NSW youth advisory panel during Children’s Week.

The Year 10 student joined a webinar panel on Tuesday, 27 October, organised by the NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian, exploring the theme of creating culturally safe and inclusive environments for every child.

With more than 700 people registered to attend online, the webinar provided a platform to discuss children’s rights and the importance of ensuring every young person feels included and valued.

Representing both young people and the NSW Youth Advisory Council, Fayra highlighted the importance of giving every child a voice.

“Every child deserves to be heard, seen and included. This year Children’s Week theme should help all reflect and take in consideration the sense of belonging and inclusion for everyone,” she said.

Fayra was selected for the NSW Youth Advisory Council in 2025 following a competitive recruitment process involving young people aged 15 to 25.

Of the 400 applicants, 90 progressed as candidates, with just 12 young people ultimately selected for the council.

Meeting every two months, members share their perspectives and advocate for issues affecting young people across NSW.

Fayra has also presented her advocacy project, Voices of Rural Youth: Opportunities and Barriers, to NSW Minister for Youth Rose Jackson.

Her term as a youth adviser has recently been extended until June 2027, allowing her to continue representing young people, particularly those from rural communities.

She is also scheduled to attend the Youth Leadership Summit in Liverpool on 1 December, representing the NSW Youth Advisory Council.

Gunnedah High School has congratulated Fayra on her achievement and commitment to ensuring young people’s voices are heard.
